Global Day of Action for Burma Global Day of Action for Burma
Calling for a Critical Response to Burma's Humanitarian Disaster
Dear Friends,
We encourage you to take action on Saturday May 17th as part of a Global Day of Action on behalf of the people of Burma, who are now facing a second catastrophe. The Burma Global Action Network, Burma Campaign UK, US Campaign for Burma and other organisations have called for people across the world to put pressure on the international community to make a decisive intervention in the humanitarian crisis in Burma.
By gathering together in the form of peaceful protests or vigils on Saturday May 17th, by gathering petitions or raising funds, the world can help persuade the United Nations to immediately supply accumulating aid to the 1.7 million people affected by Cyclone Nargis. A truly global protest could make a dramatic difference to the desperate people of Burma by demonstrating to the international community that we will not accept the malignant behaviour of the Burmese junta.
Therefore, we strongly urge our partners in the Asia-Pacific region and globally to take action on Saturday to call on the world's governments to use whatever assets and means they have to deliver aid to those suffering in Burma, even without the approval of the military regime.
Please let us know of any events that you organise or take part in.

CBS’ MOONLIGHT Cancelled 
well, the fact that i suddenly stopped receiving daemonstv's daily email must've been a sign. i have been warned, and the story has been done and done over again, i still remember Forever Knight back in the early 90's so if i can remember it, huwell,  and my searches revealed:
Update 5/13 (by Sandie): It’s official, Moonlight has been cancelled! Watch With Kristin just received a message from Gabrielle Stanton and Harry Werksman, the bosses of Moonlight: It’s true. We found out about an hour ago that Moonlight has been officially canceled. We are truly saddened by the news and are sorry that we won’t get the chance to live with our wonderful characters and follow them on their adventures for a second season. We really want to thank all our loyal fans for their undying love and support of the show. We never would have made it this far without them. In vampire solidarity…rah, rah! I’m going to go and cry now! Is MOONLIGHT cancelled? Maybe. Watch With Kristin reports that CBS made a decision that affects the show in a big way. My personal favorite Moonlight source just informed me of rumblings that the show was not looking good for a season-two pickup.
No mention of Moonlight on CBS’ 2008-09 schedule, which does not bod well for the vampire-detective drama as there are a lot of dramas that are being picked up this season. So many dramas could mean that CBS could cancel Moonlight if any of the new dramas do well. If Moonlight was canceled, it would be a terrible blow to the fans who have devoted so much time, effort, and blood (litteraly) to keep this show going. Shame on you, CBS for even considering cancelling Moonlight. CBS will officially announced its 2008-09 schedule at the Upfronts on Wednesday, May 14. Stay tuned for more info. |

Do think it's not hurting me? OK, so went over to Jo's today, and did some revision/snuggles. Hopefully my tutoring isn't completly crap :( So, I had my Differential Equations exam today. Question One was fine. Question Two was an Exact Equation question [I think] so I avoided it like the plague. Question Three was fine. Quesiton Four part one was fine. Question four part two was okay, but I checked my answer and it just didn't work. Also, since I got a constant to equal 0.5e^-t (where t is a variable) I guess I wasn't going right. But then I did it by a different method and I got the same wrong answer. Question Four part three was guesswork. Question Five was fine, except when I had to draw a graph and make some shit up. Not the best exam I've ever had, but hey. Also, on my way back home, I saw a guy wearing an American flag/bandana on his head. My temptation to yell 'IN AMERICA' was greatly tested. Then about ten mintues later, I saw a guy dressed as a Union Jack. Seriously, his T-shirt was a Union-Jack T-shirt and he was wearing Union-Jack shorts. What is it with crazy patriots today? Horses abandoned in West as feed prices rise. In the classic Hollywood western, a cowboy portrayed by John Wayne gallops across the sagebrush steppe and rocky ridges of the American West with only his horse for a companion. What the films don't show is the cowboy buying and hauling hay for his horse,or what happens to the horse when it is too aged, infirm or irascible to ride. Rescuing animals from domestic violence http://www.aacounty.org/AnimalControl/DomesticViolence.cfmI'm not sure how many of you all are aware of this, but I just read a great article in Ladies Home Journal about how there is more attention being paid to protecting animals from domestic abusers. Its focus was on one woman, who had survived domestic abuse, and witnessed her ex-husband's merciless killing of sheep on their property. He had also ran his car over her beloved collie :( This woman had started a sanctuary, where battered victims may bring their pets. I was going to post this article, but the LHJ site doesn't seem to have archives of magazine articles :/ A lot of women stay in these harrowing situations, due to the fact that they fear for their pets' lives. Absolutely understandable, since most abusers that hurt their spouses do the same to their children and family pets... whether if from merely their violent tendencies or a means of controlling and forcing the partner into submission. On a side note: They mentioned how cruelty to animals is a felony, while abusing your partner is a misdemeanor. While, I find it wonderful, that animal cruelty is a felony, I do agree that it's disgusting that beating up your partner is a lesser charge. Although, I didn't like the statement on the site that this was a problem with society's priorities. As I'm sure you all with agree, a cat or a dog has just as much right to live as any other life form on this planet. And that includes humans. Just thought I'd add a post of good news on here, since we get so many depressing articles... While my heart breaks every time I read or see poor innocent animals abused, tortured, killed, etc. at the hand of cruel humans, it's good to remind ourselves that there are people out there who DO care and reach out to help better the lives for critters. Donate $1 (or more) to support a Feral Cat Colony An LJ-er -- eilonwy -- a graduate student in Phoenix, has taken on the HUGE compassionate project of TNR-ing and then feeding/sheltering a feral cat colony of 25 needy furballs living around her condo building. She's talked the building management into not calling in the Humane Society (which will only euthanize them, as ferals are not usually adoptable as indoor pets), and allowing her to trap them -- May 11th is D-day -- get them fixed and vetted, and then be responsible for their care and feeding! An amazing thing for one person to commit to! Clearly a responsible, trustworthy, persuasive person. :-) 1) You can read about the colony's progress here at Project-Cat Blogspot. 2) You can enter a RAFFLE for just a $1 a ticket and get something nice -- besides feeling good that you helped some homeless critters. 3) Or you can donate any amount securely via Paypal by clicking the Donate buttons on the Project Cat blogspot. |

disjointed thoughts. omg THURSDAY! i still don't have tickets to that gig aksdjh alksdj XP it's funny though since my playlist these past couple of days is full of nothing but MCR and FOB and JIMMY EAT WORLD and THE ATARIS and maybe the occasional GOOD CHARLOTTE and ARMOR FOR SLEEP. no THURSDAY in sight. maybe i should fix that. "enraged" always suited me more than "emotional". [update] randomness; I actually had a fairly decent entry typed up when mini-hell broke loose here at the team area, I got distracted, cut the entire entry out and then copied something else right over that. Stupid I know. Twitched for a good bit, but no harm done. Was previously chatting on YM with Vierge autobotvierge. We were on an E.S. Posthumus trip, since I tossed her some MediaFire links where I've stored (and consequently used to share) the albums that I have. Am feeling much better now, having written down the stuff that I needed to get out of my system. Attempts to write have been made, enough that I've updated my dA account with someone new for my Perspectives category. Looking forward to writing more as I continue to get my bearings. Vierge's birthday is coming up and I want to write her something special. On one hand, it'll help me to get back into the swing of writing up original fiction, on the other, it'll give me the opportunity to write a good friend of mine a story that she can consider a gift from me to her. Also waiting for Kam slpwlkngdreamer to come online. I've recently started writing something for us to have fun with, though I'll be doing most of the writing. Finished reading the Tales of the Otori trilogy last night. Setting that aside for now since I still need to grab myself a copy of The Harsh Cry of the Heron. Maybe I'll find a copy later, I'll just have to see. Am heading over to Makati to poke around for a decent headset for my laptop. I have a lot to do before the week is out. I'm hoping I can browse the bookstore for a bit just to see if I can pick some more books. I like having stuff to read, it makes me feel productive. I need to write. I think I'll try to. I have been a vegetarian for almost 2 years now. When I first started, my diet consisted of mostly carbs, dairy, junk food, and other not-so-healthy foods. Last January I decided to change my eating habits a little more, and gave up most dairy, and junk food, and lost 40lbs in the process. Now, this is a good thing, considering when I started I was overweight. Now, I'm going for those last 15lbs, and it hasn't been easy. In the process of trying to eat as healthy as I can, I'm afraid I'm not actually eating enough, or getting enough nutrients. So, my question is, to either you healthy vegetarian eaters, or those of you who happen to be on a diet too: What is your daily menu like? |

sa mga gustong mag immigrate sa u.s. of a mia, or tina as we used to call her here in manila, is my high school classmate. after high school graduation she moved back to the states and sought out her life, and recently thanks to the internet, we got in touch again and i would like to share one of her blog entries, just a bitter dose of reality to those of us who are very tired of taking calls from these americans, to those of us who still dream or need to work as a nurse or like myself as a physical therapist there, someday. and i quote:

Category: News and Politics The Marine Corps taught me a lot about life, taking the high road when no one else will and respecting others. But never in a million years would I have imagined that the one thing I didn't learn was that somehow, society will look at my kids and call them that hateful word.
I am a first and second generation citizen, born of Mexican and Filipino parents. My kids have that mix plus Irish and German backgrounds. And I accept, with a grain of salt, that others view my heritage as dirty, lazy, freeloading and overburdened with criminals. Whatever. And I have also heard the N word used between friends when I was still in California. But here in the Deep South, that word brings different sentiments.
What I didn't learn from the Corps was how the divide between race, gender and religion were still so prevelant in society at large. Even on TWS, there are forum posts that still bleed with hatred and discrimination. And yes, you can argue that that is how non-uniformed citizens conduct themselves and I should be used to it. But I have traveled around the world, and lived in many societies, where I was the foreigner and unwelcomed by the majority. But can someone here please explain to me why 1) my background is the target of violence and hatred (both on CNN and TWS), 2) how my son and deceased brother became n*ggers and maybe most imortantly,3) how in the hell am I supposed to react to it all?
I don't think the N word and Latina were ever supposed to be synonymous expletives, but really, it all boils down to the same thing if it is used to with the intent to claim racial superiority over another. Last time I checked, I was no less of a Marine or even an American, because I have slanted eyes, weigh 100 pounds or keep birthing out babies (which I can afford by the way, and am not on Welfare over). But what I am today is a disabled veteran who would have died for all of you had I been called to do so, and I refuse to teach my kids that they are less worthy of the very respect Marines fight for.
So, having voiced an opinion, I invite one of you, to explain to me how what I did for the U.S.A. is less deserving of respect than any of my less racially mixed counterparts. My sons and the memory of my deceased brother deserve better than that. When a racial comment is made and/or directed based solely on the color of ones skin, then that is called racism.
It can be sugar coated all you want, but it is what it is. Please think about the messages you are trying to send out when you send them." |
