WOW! Last week was one heck of a PIRATEY WEEK! Ships were sailed, cannons were fired, battles were fought, and At World's End was finally unveiled to the world! Suffice to say, Black Pearl Philippines was there to experience it all and come out unscathed :D! What a man, what I man! If I were Elizabeth, I would have chosen him instead of Will! LOL!!! Heck, I would have chosen Norrington over Will! Ah, and Tom Hollander (Lord Beckett) --- Sweet, little Tom. You were despicable in Pirates 3, but you will always be my adorable, odd Mr. Collins from Pride & Prejudice ^_^!

Gabe BarBoso,
Chairman of the EITC, East India Tarush Chorva
"It's nothing personal, Jack. We seek 10 million signatures to let the governments of the world know we are serious about achieving a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare at the United Nations.

The scale of suffering for animals in the world today is unprecedented.

Around 60 billion farm animals are used each year globally to produce meat, milk and eggs. The majority are raised in industrial farming systems where their welfare needs are not met.

Globally, there are some 600 million dogs, and a similar number of cats, of which an estimated 80% are stray or unwanted.

The illegal and often inhumane trade in wildlife and wildlife parts is a soaring black market worth $10 billion a year, exceeded only by arms and drug smuggling. Millions of wild animals are killed, captured or traded inhumanely in this shady business.

An estimated 80% of power input on farms in developing countries is supplied by draught animals, however the resources made available are often woefully inadequate, leading to significant welfare issues.

Animals are also affected on a huge scale by natural disasters, though seldom considered.

Warning...I joke a bit in this letter and I hope it won't offend anyone. Thanks.

Dear Ricky,

How's it going? How's life? Ah, the pun. You know, remembering the years that I've known you, there was never a meeting when you didn't try to kick my ass, call me names, or attempt to sit on me (enter the lapdance of death :P). I will eternally remember the various ways you'd make fun of my "hot old guys", and I will never forget the countless times you've poked me on my sides so hard, they actually hurt :P. Still, I know you did all that because we were cool. And I will miss it all now that you're gone.

Man, how will we cosplay Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition now? Me and Paul will have to look for a new Biggles :(. I knew I should have gotten all the MP ringtones from your phone the last time we met (and that was just a few days ago! Sheesh!). Also, thanks for taking me to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Awesome film. You had the hots for Kate Winslet :P. And I kinda had the hots for Tom Wilkinson :P. Now I'll remember you whenever I see that film @.@.

You lived a great life, dude! 48 excellent years! You had awesome friends, a GREAT girlfriend (Love ya, Reitch!), the New Worlds Alliance loved you, outstanding kids, and lots of accomplishments. One heckuva life. Something to be proud of.

Btw, who's going to tell me that I look better with a mask on, now that you have sailed away to the West (LotR Bilbo style)? Will definitely miss your ginormous presence this Saturday's moot. *Sigh*...Too bad you weren't able to see me with my fiancee. You always thought I'd "tone down" my "perversion" if I were with him. Guess what? I'll always be a manyak! Mwahahah!

Thanks for everything, Ricky!
I'll never forget the man and the fun!
I'll see ya' when I see ya', bossing! Mwash!

Bastos forever,
Gabe

PS: Just in case you don't remember, your last text message to me was: "Hi r u going to yale l8er?
W00TW00T! W00TW00T!

I actually got to MEET The Lettermen during their first concert in Araneta Coliseum this year ^_^! Good thing I finally caught them this time around :).

Here's a pic of me and my mom with them on stage :). They're all pretty HOT eh? ;)! Hahah...Is it just me, or do I look like I'm about to cry? LOL!
Gah, kinda sucks that the pic is a tad blurry. I should have brought *my* camera @.@!

I also got my CD signed by them :D! Isn't that awesome?

I was able to talk to each of them a little bit after the show :)! Mark was a cool guy :)! We talked a bit about his brief stint in Vega$ as Robert Urich's stand-in :). Tony was soooo effin' SWEEEET! He said some sweet stuff to me and shook my hand firmly (Bah, he probably does that to ALL the ladies ;)! hahah! Way ta' go, Tony!). Don seemed like the quiet type. He just nodded and said something like "Hello..".

Anyway, whatta experience! These guys were bustin' charts waaaay before I was born! Love is a Many Splendored Thing, When I Fall in Love, Summer Place, just to name a few :)!

Too bad Robin Gibb didn't have any photo-ops during his concert :(. Maybe I'll post some pics from that soon. Anyway, bring Barry over!

12" of humanoid plastic in my hand to start the year :D!

To all my Metal Gear Solid friends...
FINALLY!!! A COL. CAMPBELL 12" ACTION FIGURE OMG!!! *DROOLNESS EVURRRR*

LOTS and LOTS more pics here ^o^

I swear...When the people over at HotToys decided to make this figure, they were thinking about ME!!! FECK! THIS is THE 12" figure of my dreams! It's Rambo's Col. Trautman (or as I would like to call him, Metal Gear's Roy Campbell ;)), forever immortalized in 12" humanoid plastic! Way ta' go, HotToys! GREAT work on the face (It's Richard Crenna!), the clothes, the accessories, and basically everything :D!

Truth be told, I was actually surprised when this figure was first announced. First off, Trautman wasn't really much of a popular character. Heck, most of the people who saw the Rambo movies don't even remember his name. They just remember him as the "Colonel Guy". So man oh man, was I a happy fangirl when this baby was given the green light ^___________^!!!

Heheh...I guess this makes up for the fact that an MGS Roy Campbell figure was never made :(. But now I have Trautman (who I'll probably mostly refer to as Campbell)...And he's the only 12" military figure I'll ever need #^_^#.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE :D!

Hannibal Rising! Will the REAL Hannibal Lecter please stand up?

With the movie only two months away, I have to admit...Hannibal Rising has done something we didn't think any force in the universe would be able to do.

It has successfully turned this...

Into this...

Yes...Hannibal Rising has turned Mr. Fava-beans-Chianti himself into a lovelorn, tragic, tormented, anti-hero, vigilante POSTER BOY!!!

*Cue Vader's "NOOOOO" here*

Despite the fact that I abhor scary movies, I've seen ALL the Lecter movies...Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, and Hannibal! I don't know if I'm just being too picky, or that I think I *know* Hannibal, but the Hannibal in Hannibal Rising just didn't seem like the man he grew up to be. You would not expect *that* young Hannibal to be the man we saw in SOTL!

First of all, Hannibal isn't your "usual" romantic. He doesn't go making googly eyes at chicks or liking them because they're "hot". Yet in Hannibal Rising (the book anyway) we see him "crushing" over Lady Murasaki (his uncle's wife). Just look at the picture of them together! WTF?! He is NOT the kind of guy who'd hold you close, look into your eyes, touch your cheek, and whisper sweet nothings to your ear. That's just NOT Lecter! If you want to see what Lecter is like in love, look at his relationship with Clarice in SoTL and Hannibal!

Second, I think they made young Lecter look too much like a "male model". Hannibal Lecter was never the typical "hot guy". Never was. Also, considering that most fans have associated Lecter with Hopkins, Gaspard Ulliel just doesn't emulate a young Anthony Hopkins or Hannibal Lecter for that matter. In fact, the movie The Human Stain did a better job of emulating a young Hopkins with Wentworth Miller (Scofield from Prison Break :P).

For short, I just can't seem to connect the Hannibal in Hannibal Rising to the Hannibal in SOTL. It was almost as if the movie was written for a younger popcorn audience. But then, I've always been a "fangirl" of the Lecter movies, so that's probably why I'm desperately "holding on to" what was :P! Kinda makes me wish Thomas Harris kept Lecter's past a secret x.x!

So who really IS the Tarot Card Killer?

I found Scoop (Woody Allen's latest offering) to be a wonderfully lovable, funny movie :)! It does an excellent job mixing comedy, suspense, and a little bit of romance on the side, to create a film that you'll happily follow until the surprising, and rather anti-cliche ending ;). The cast also delivers a great performance. Scarlet Johansson is very believable as the rookie journalist Sondra, Hugh Jackman is charming as the rich and suave Peter, Ian McShane (in a non-Deadwood role ;)) as the "undead" and eager journalist Joe, and Woody Allen is once again at his best playing a jittery guy with glasses as the funny magician Sydney.

Those who are expecting a typical romantic comedy will experience so much more. There's a little fantasy and whodunit murder mystery in the movie that keeps it exciting and unpredictable. Heck, the first few minutes alone involves a dead guy (Ian McShane), jumping of "Death's boat" in order to swim back to the world of the living just so that he can give a journalist (Scarlet) a tip on who the Tarot Card Killer is ;)!

As I've stated before, one of the things I love about this movie is the conclusion (which deals a lot with Woody Allen and Hugh Jackman's characters ;))! I love how it was not the ending I expected! Seriously, you watch this movie thinking that you finally got it, and then suddenly things take a complete U-turn and you end up not knowing what is 'really' going to happen next.

So yeah, I like this movie. I like it tons. And the fact that Deadwood's Al Swearengen and Star Wars' Julian Glover are there help too ;)!

Man, that's one huge courtyard O.O!

Me and my much-taller cousins, Aisha and Jolleen, in the dungeons of the Louvre (and a model of the original castle in the background).

The Eiffel Tower at night :)! I took this picture while we were cruising on the Seine river.

By the entrance of Euro Disney :D!

Standing atop one of the "long rocks" in Brittany :D!

France is no doubt one heckuva beautiful country. In Paris alone, they don't hold back on the art. Almost everywhere you look, artistic eyecandies abound. You can just imagine how long it took them to build all that without the technology we have today!

I probably won't live there though. Their keyboard is AZERTY, and there are only a few that speak English (depends on which province or city of course). Still, it's a nice country to visit :D!
Join us as we exhibit the best works in fiction and comics, and award the best of them with a grand cash prize of P100,000!!!

Everyone is encouraged to show up with an originally created MASK, in line with the theme of FILIPINO FANTASY. Prizes shall be given out that night to the best original masks.

Writers' Panel

Philippine Fandom is not just about going crazy over foreign shows. Filipino fans are also about appreciating works that stir the imagination and open the heart to the possible.

There are those among us who have done this and taken fandom to the next logical step. They have become creators in their own right. Get to meet them at New

Worlds 4: A Broken Time Machine – The 4th Philippine Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention. Chat with them and find out what drives them to take this leap of faith, and what it took them to do it successfully.

Convention Auctions

An exciting addition to this year's convention is the New Worlds Auction, which will feature fan memorabilia, collectibles, and general merchandise at great prices. The New Worlds Alliance counts hundreds of dedicated science-fiction and fantasy fans among its ranks, so expect a wide and colorful selection of items.

This will be a silent auction. Participants will be able to keep track of the auction by watching large bulletin boards set up at the auction booth and at various places in the convention area.

New Worlds Amazing Race

It's a race against time and other geeks as the teams scurry through challenge after challenge to win the New Worlds Amazing Race.

Last year, 10 groups posed challenges to 7 teams. In the semi-finals, teams PHP, PHS, VA and PTM competed to be part of the finals, but the face-off was between Isab and Hershey of PHP, and Ranulf and Sasha of PHS.

Last year, the Hogwarts students bagged the victory through Isab's award-winning handstand. Due to the success of last year's race, most of the NWA member groups clamored for a reprise for New Worlds 4. The challenges are more outrageous, the race is more exciting, and the finale will be a bigger surprise than before.

Parties interested in participating in this year's race are encouraged to brush up on their knowledge of science fiction and fantasy. Who knows? Knowing how to spell the name of that obscure race in the Star Wars universe may pay off. Who will win this year?

Cosplay Contest

Every year, many convention visitors look forward to the Cosplay Contest, where fans dress up as their favorite science fiction and fantasy characters. The crowds flock to see blue or green skin, androids, Jedi, Sith, Federation officers, and in some cases, even vehicles!

This year, the Cosplay Contest will be held during the Masquerade Ball, at 6PM on July 16, 2006.

Masquerade Ball

The Masquerade Ball is a grand event intended to cap off another great convention. The Masquerade Ball will include the cosplay contest, the finale of the

NWA Race, and musical numbers of a science fiction and fantasy flavor.

Masquerade Ball Program:
I. Parade of Royalty
II. Parade of Ball Cosplayers
III. Parade of Science Fiction and Fantasy Cosplayers
IV. Photo Shoot on Stage
V. Musical Number
VI. NWA Race Finals
VII. Awarding of Caption Contest Winners
VIII. Awarding of Cosplay Winners
IX. Awarding of NWA Race Winners

***

The New Worlds Alliance (NWA) was founded in 2003 by seven local science fiction and fantasy fan groups: Via Astris - The Star Trek Club of the Philippines, Star Wars Philippines, The Philippine Tolkien Society, Pinoy Harry Potter, Pinoy X-Philes, Pinoy Slayers, and The Alliance of Eclectic Gamers and Interactive Storytellers (AEGIS). Its aim was to provide a venue for Filipino science fiction and fantasy fans to interact, hold activities, and express themselves and their love for their respective fandoms. (read more about it here.) In March of that same year, Via Astris hosted "New Worlds: The 1st Philippine Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention," at the Premiere Cinema Complex to celebrate the release of "Star Trek: Nemesis".

In January 2004, it was The Philippine Tolkien Society's turn to host "A Long Expected Party: The 2nd Philippine Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention", to mark the end of the Lord of the Rings movie saga and the release of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King". The original seven Alliance members groups were joined by The Matrix Philippines, Arkham Philippines, Pinoy Fremen, The Talon, and the Philippine Highlander Society in the two-day event at the

Powerplant Mall Parking Quad.

With the advent of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith", Star Wars Philippines organized "New Worlds Episode III: The 3rd Philippine Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention" in May 2005 at the Glorietta Activity Center. Four new groups were inaugurated into the Alliance this year: Mechapinoy, Sci-fi

Philippines, The Philippine Order of Narnians, and CharmedPinoy. Wheel of Time Philippines also participated as a guest group.

This year, the NWA and Fully Booked present "New Worlds 4: A Broken Time Machine," in celebration of Neil Gaiman's First Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards.

The awarding ceremony will be held on 15 July 2006, and will coincide with the Fourth Philippine Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention on 16 July at the Rockwell Tent, Makati City. The NWA is joined this year by a new group, Battlestar Galactica-Philippines.

X-Men 3 : Hey! Where's the part where Magneto and Rogue make-out?!

Seriously, where's the part where Rogue and Magneto make-out? Didn't they --- Oh wait...Damn! That was in the comics! My bad. Eheheheheh!

Anywayz, I finally got to see the movie last weekend :D. Being a fan of the comics aside, I actually enjoyed it. Lotsa fun, action, death...Yeap...Out of all the X-movies, X3 is the one with the highest bodycount (No thanks to Jean "I'm finally psycho in lalaland" Grey).

I don't really want to explain the movie. Yeah, they got the dark phoenix thing wrong, and some of the characters were a tad inconsistent, but that's okay. I look at the movie-verse as something that's standalone and not 100% reliant on the comics :D! Oh, and seeing Mystique get dumped by Magneto and Mystique later ratting out on him was brilliant! HA!

Btw, is it just me, or did the scene where Mags moved the bridge look really wicked?! :D

PS: No Brian Cox (Stryker), but I can forgive them for that. After all, he *should* be back in the Wolverine movie ;)! W00TW00T!

(Magneto/Rogue image courtesy of sionnain :D)
